Supporting You as a Next of Kin or Carer

Caring for an elderly parent, grandparent or relative can be emotionally and physically demanding — especially when you’re balancing work, family and daily responsibilities.

Many next of kin contact us because they:

  • Live at a distance from their relative
  • Are the sole or main carer
  • Are concerned about changes in vision, mobility or confidence
  • Want a simple, reliable way to arrange an eye test without stress

Our home eye test service is designed to remove the burden from you — while ensuring your loved one receives professional, compassionate care in the comfort of their own home.

Signs Your Elderly Relative May Need A Home Eye Test

Vision changes are often gradual and may go unnoticed — especially by elderly patients themselves. As a next of kin, you may spot the signs first.

Frequent Falls or Unsteadiness

Difficulty judging steps, furniture or changes in flooring may indicate declining vision.

Struggling with Reading or TV

Holding books very close, increasing TV volume or sitting unusually close to screens.

Confusion or Withdrawal

Poor vision can worsen anxiety, confusion or social withdrawal especially in dementia patients.

Missed Appointments or Reluctance to Leave Home

Mobility issues or anxiety may prevent visits to high street opticians.

Is Your Relative Eligible For a Free NHS Home Eye Test?

Many elderly and housebound patients qualify for a free NHS-funded home eye test, meaning there is often no cost to the patient or their family.

Your relative may be eligible through the NHS if they:

  • Are unable to leave home unaccompanied
  • Are aged 60 or over
  • Have a physical disability, learning difficulty or mental health condition
  • Have conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's, stroke recovery or arthritis

You can read full eligibility details on our NHS Eligibility page.

Dementia and Memory Conditions

Dementia and memory related conditions that make attending a high street optician difficult

Mobility & Neurological Conditions

Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery and mobility-limiting neurological conditions

Physical Disability and Arthritis

Severe arthritis or physical disabilities affecting movement or independence

Long Term Health Conditions

Long-term health conditions that prevent leaving home safely or comfortably
